Indian air cargo growing but in need of reform

In a recent survey of India's aviation commissioned by the FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry), over two thirds of respondents identified cargo and ground handling as areas of growth. But the study also found that the sector is being held back by a range of factors, and is in need of reform to realise its full potential.

The survey, entitled "Indian Aviation: waiting on the runway" states: "Infrastructure constitutes one of the biggest hurdles in the seamless growth of this sector. Shortages of trained manpower, lack of access to finance and lack of incentives are other issues stalling industry growth", and 57% of respondents cited high taxation and policy regime as a further impediment to growth.

Suggested reforms within the survey report included the creation of a National Aviation University to upskill workers and build capacity, the creation of a single civil aviation authority and the completion of bilateral agreements with nations including Singapore, Sri Lanka and countries in the Middle East.
