Over 7000 UPS drivers remain accident free for the past 25 years

UPS has announced that their 7,221 drivers have managed to avoid accidents for the past 25 years or more. The introduction of 1,519 new drivers has maintained the company’s running streak of succeeding in the prevention of work based accidents for the past quarter of a century.

The company has seen their large volume of drivers log over 5.3 billion miles, in addition to 198,000 years of safe driving throughout past years, the equivalent of travelling to the planet Mars and back a staggering 19 times.

Chairman of the U.S House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Bill Shuster, has spoken of the importance of keeping roads and highways safe for travellers, describing it has their “highest priority.” Shuster also went on to say: “I commend UPS and these outstanding drivers for helping create safer roads for us all and achieving the milestone of 25 or more crash-free years of driving.”

An example of UPS’ success can be seen in regards to UPS driver Tom Camp. Camp was titled UPS’ top safe driver in 2013, having driven for 51 years, delivering 5 million packages within this time period without incurring an accident. The Great Lakes Distract package car driver has said: “I never thought I’d be here for over half a century. But UPS’ safety training has helped me stay healthy and accident-free. It’s truly an honour to lead such a distinguished group of drivers.”

Upon joining the company, UPS employees are taught how to comply with the appropriate and correct safety procedures. The first day of training sees this taught within the classroom. An example of UPS’ ability to maintain their safe driving throughout the years comes from their decision in 2010 to ban texting and e-mail messaging from behind the wheel, a proven cause of many road crashes.

John McDevitt, UPS’ senior Vice President of Human Resources and Labour Relations has said: “Our training and our drivers’ attention to details, such as avoiding distractions while driving, all play a part in their remarkable record.”
